Our Gyaneacology department offers expert care for women’s health needs, from prenatal care and childbirth to gynaecological concerns and reproductive health.
Gynecology and obstetrics are two closely related medical specialties that focus on women’s reproductive health. While they are distinct fields, they often overlap in addressing various aspects of women’s well-being throughout different stages of life:
1. Gynecology:
Gynecology deals with the health and diseases of the female reproductive system. Gynecologists provide care for a wide range of conditions, including menstrual disorders, pelvic pain, infertility, contraception, and menopause. They perform routine screenings like Pap smears to detect cervical cancer and other abnormalities. Gynecologists also diagnose and treat conditions like uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). They may perform surgical procedures related to the female reproductive system, such as hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) and laparoscopic surgeries.
2. Obstetrics:
Obstetrics is the branch of medicine that focuses on pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. Obstetricians, or OB-GYNs, provide prenatal care to pregnant women, monitoring the health of both the mother and the developing fetus. They assist with labor and delivery, ensuring a safe and healthy childbirth process. After childbirth, obstetricians provide postpartum care to mothers and their newborns, addressing any medical needs or complications that may arise. Obstetricians also handle high-risk pregnancies and manage conditions that might affect pregnancy, such as gestational diabetes or hypertension.
3. Combined Care:
Many healthcare providers specialize in both gynecology and obstetrics, becoming OB-GYNs. They offer comprehensive care for women, addressing reproductive health needs across their lifespan. This can include routine gynecological exams, family planning, pregnancy care, childbirth, and menopause management.
Both gynecology and obstetrics play critical roles in maintaining the health and well-being of women. They collaborate to provide a holistic approach to reproductive and maternal health, from addressing medical concerns to supporting the reproductive journey from conception to childbirth and beyond.
