ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERIES

Orthopedic laparoscopic surgeries are relatively less common than laparoscopic surgeries in other medical specialties. Orthopedic procedures typically involve the musculoskeletal system, and many orthopedic conditions are better suited for traditional open surgery. However, there are a few orthopedic procedures that can be performed using minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques. Here are a couple of examples:

    1.    Arthroscopic Knee Surgery: While not technically laparoscopic (as it involves joints rather than the abdominal cavity), arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure commonly used in orthopedics. It’s used to diagnose and treat various knee conditions, including torn ligaments (e.g., ACL or PCL), damaged cartilage (e.g., meniscus tears), and synovitis. Small incisions are made around the knee, and a tiny camera and instruments are inserted to visualize and repair the joint.
    2.    Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Release: Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common hand condition caused by pressure on the median nerve in the wrist. Endoscopic carpal tunnel release is a minimally invasive procedure that involves making a small incision in the wrist and using an endoscope to release the ligament that’s compressing the nerve, alleviating symptoms.

It’s important to note that many other orthopedic procedures, such as joint replacements or spinal surgeries, are typically performed as open surgeries due to the complexity and precision required. Minimally invasive techniques like arthroscopy and endoscopy are generally used when they offer advantages like quicker recovery times and reduced scarring, but not all orthopedic conditions are suitable for these approaches. Patients should consult with their orthopedic surgeons to determine the most appropriate surgical method based on their specific condition.
