Total knee replacement, also known as total knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure performed to replace a damaged or arthritic knee joint with an artificial knee implant. This procedure is commonly used to relieve pain, improve knee joint function, and enhance mobility for individuals with severe knee conditions, such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or significant knee injuries. Here’s an overview of total knee replacement:
1. Preoperative Evaluation: Before the surgery, the patient undergoes a comprehensive evaluation, including a medical history, physical examinations, and imaging studies (such as X-rays or MRI scans) to assess the extent of knee joint damage.
2. Anesthesia: Total knee replacement is usually performed under general anesthesia, which means the patient is asleep and pain-free during the procedure. Regional anesthesia (spinal or epidural) may also be used in some cases.
3. Incision: The surgeon makes an incision over the knee joint, exposing the damaged knee joint.
4. Joint Reshaping: The damaged or arthritic parts of the knee joint are removed. The surgeon may use specialized surgical instruments to reshape the bone surfaces, including the femur (thigh bone), tibia (shin bone), and patella (kneecap).
5. Knee Implant Placement: Artificial knee implant components are inserted. These typically consist of metal or ceramic components that replace the ends of the femur and tibia and a plastic spacer that serves as the artificial cartilage. In some cases, the patella may also be resurfaced with a plastic component.
6. Fixation: The implant components may be fixed in place using bone cement or may rely on press-fit techniques that allow the bone to grow into the implant over time.
7. Closure: After securing the implant, the surgeon closes the incision with sutures or staples and applies sterile dressings.
8. Recovery: Post-surgery, the patient is monitored in a recovery area until they wake up from anesthesia. Physical therapy and rehabilitation are typically initiated soon after the surgery to help regain strength, range of motion, and function in the knee joint. Full recovery can take several weeks to months.
Total knee replacement is considered a highly successful and effective procedure for improving knee joint function, reducing pain, and enhancing the quality of life for individuals with debilitating knee conditions. However, as with any surgery, there are potential risks and complications that should be discussed with the healthcare provider before undergoing total knee replacement.
