TURP

Category: TURP

TURP stands for Transurethral Resection of the Prostate. It is a surgical procedure used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is the enlargement of the prostate gland in men. This enlarged prostate can lead to urinary symptoms such as difficulty urinating, frequent urination, and incomplete bladder emptying. TURP is a common and effective method for alleviating these symptoms. Here’s an overview of the TURP procedure:

    1.    Preparation: Before the procedure, the patient may undergo various tests, including blood tests and imaging studies, to assess their overall health and prostate condition. Anesthesia options are discussed with the patient, which can include general, spinal, or epidural anesthesia.
    2.    Insertion of the Resectoscope: During TURP, a resectoscope is inserted through the urethra and into the prostate. The resectoscope is a long, thin tube with a light and a wire loop or other cutting instrument at the end.
    3.    Resection of Prostate Tissue: Once the resectoscope is in place, the surgeon uses the wire loop or cutting instrument to remove excess prostate tissue. This tissue is then flushed into the bladder and eventually removed.
    4.    Visualization: Throughout the procedure, the surgeon can see the inside of the prostate and monitor the progress on a screen, thanks to the camera and light on the resectoscope.
    5.    Completion and Catheter Placement: After enough tissue has been removed to alleviate the urinary obstruction, the resectoscope is removed, and a catheter is inserted through the urethra into the bladder. The catheter allows urine to drain while the surgical area heals.
    6.    Recovery: Most patients stay in the hospital for a day or two with the catheter in place. Once the catheter is removed, patients typically experience improved urinary flow and relief from BPH symptoms. Full recovery may take several weeks, during which patients may need to avoid strenuous activities and follow post-operative instructions provided by their healthcare provider.

TURP is considered an effective treatment for BPH, but as with any surgery, there are potential risks and complications, which should be discussed with the healthcare provider. Alternatives to TURP may also be considered based on the patient’s specific condition and preferences.
